TrIsCo - Transition Island Communities: Empowering Localities to Act

Total budget (match funding + ERDF): €349, 275 (match funding €83,319 + ERDF funding €265,956

TrIsCo aims to:

  • Enable different ‘islands’ of communities (households, businesses and public bodies) to reduce their Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions by changing their behaviour towards their use of resources;
  • Embed sustainability (social, economic and environmental) into behaviour change drivers;
  • Overcome barriers to implementing low carbon communities.

NB: The term ‘island’ refers to communities with distinct characteristics at different stages of engagement in the climate change agenda.

Central to TrIsCo’s impact will be the exchange of good practice, training seminars, experience and expertise by multi-disciplinary teams across the cross border region.

The key outcome is to create bespoke ‘Empowering CO2 Reduction’ catalogues of instruments, initiatives or local authority action plans with quantifiable measurement tools for public bodies, commerce and the public to take action themselves and be able to assess their own success.

These catalogues can then be applied across Europe to achieve sustainable carbon reduction through behaviour change. The project will evaluate and advertise the CO2 savings of the communities, and the consequences of these savings, so they can see that they are making a real difference, thus encouraging further behaviour change.

Activity areas:

  • Community engagement – roadshows, climate street parties, action packs, solar energy seminars
  • Influencing policy – local, national and international directives, policies and targets
  • Baselining and carbon footprints – energy ratings per community per year, company ecological footprint, island carbon footprint, value for money assessment
  • Education and influencing behaviour change – education programmes, training roadshows, psychological research on energy efficiency acceptance
  • Defining community character – questionnaires
  • Creation of simple energy assessment software tool

If you are a community group, business or school you can get free support to help you reduce your carbon emissions. Please contact the representative in your region.
